Years of prolonged conflict in Syria have left large parts of the country—particularly the north‑east—with severely degraded infrastructure. Power supply remains unstable, and telecommunications networks are unreliable or frequently unavailable. These conditions have significantly constrained humanitarian operations, making it difficult for agencies such as UNICEF to coordinate programmes in education, child protection, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) from key operational hubs such as Qamishli.
To overcome these limitations and ensure secure, continuous communication for both staff and partners, UNICEF requested dedicated support from emergency.lu. In response, Luxembourg configured a tailored satellite connectivity service, known as the “UNICEF Syria Ku” mission, operating on the SES‑12 satellite.
This deployment provided reliable, independent broadband connectivity, bypassing fragile local infrastructure and ensuring uninterrupted communications in a highly volatile environment.
