Facts

At 12:29:08 (UTC) on August 14th, 2021, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck the Tiburon Peninsula, in the Caribbean nation of Haiti.

The Government of Haiti sent a request for international assistance to the EU Delegation in Port-au-Prince, which triggered the activation of the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM).

Luxembourg deployed its emergency.lu solution and a team of three technicians within the UCPM framework and supported two European response teams by providing satellite connectivity; (1) the French water purification team in Las Cayes and (2) the Norwegian field hospital in L’Asile.

In addition, the team deployed a VHF radio repeater site in Les Cayes and Jeremie for the emergency telecommunications cluster. An expert from Luxembourg was part of the United Nations disaster assessment and coordination team.
