Following the destruction caused by Cyclone Batsirai in February 2022, Luxembourg responded positively to a request for international assistance to support the affected population in Madagascar. Acting through the International Humanitarian Partnership (IHP) and in coordination with national partners, Luxembourg contributed to early emergency response efforts on the ground.
Within this framework, a volunteer firefighter from the CGDIS Humanitarian Intervention Team (HIT) was deployed to Madagascar on 23 February 2022 to support the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) mission. UNDAC teams are mobilized in the immediate aftermath of disasters to assess humanitarian needs and coordinate international response efforts.
During the mission, the Luxembourg expert worked alongside UN teams and partners to evaluate priority needs and facilitate the organization of international relief assistance. This early-phase deployment contributed to ensuring a coherent and effective response to the cyclone’s impact.
After completing a two-week mission, the deployed expert returned to Luxembourg on 10 March 2022, marking the conclusion of the country’s direct operational engagement in this UNDAC deployment.
Luxembourg’s intervention illustrates its commitment to rapid-response mechanisms, providing skilled personnel through international partnerships to strengthen coordination and needs assessment in the critical first phase of humanitarian emergencies.
