Following the devastating earthquake of 14 August 2021, Haiti’s already fragile healthcare system suffered severe damage, with hospitals destroyed or rendered non‑functional at a time when thousands of injured people required urgent medical care. In particular, there was a critical shortage of surgical capacity, especially for maternal health and emergency obstetric care, prompting humanitarian agencies to seek rapid solutions.
In response to a request from UNFPA, the Government of Luxembourg, through emergency.lu, provided a high‑impact, ready‑to‑deploy medical solution in the form of two fully equipped 20‑foot Hospitainer surgical containers. These turnkey units were designed to function as self‑contained operating theatres, capable of supporting both general and obstetric surgery in emergency settings.
Each container was delivered fully equipped with advanced medical systems, including:
- Hydraulic operating tables and surgical lighting systems
- Anaesthesia machines (Diamedica Glostavent)
- Sterilisation equipment (autoclaves)
- Electrosurgical units, aspirators, and medical furniture
- Complete sets of surgical instruments and UNICEF medical kits
- Integrated air filtration, air conditioning, and climate control systems
In addition to the core surgical containers, the deployment included a wide range of supporting equipment:
- Two 30 kVA generators to ensure autonomous power supply
- Tent modules and dispensary facilities to expand operational capacity
- Advanced diagnostic and monitoring equipment, including defibrillators, ultrasound systems, and patient monitors
- Accessories and consumables required for immediate field use
The shipment consisted of four 20‑foot containers (including operational support and accessories), with a total weight of over 19 tonnes. Transport was organised via ocean freight from Antwerp to Port‑au‑Prince, ensuring safe and efficient delivery to Haiti despite the logistical challenges following the earthquake.
Upon arrival, the equipment was handed over to UNFPA, enabling the rapid deployment of fully functional surgical facilities in affected areas. These units played a crucial role in:
- Restoring life‑saving surgical capacity in areas with damaged hospitals
- Supporting maternal and reproductive healthcare services
- Enabling treatment of trauma and emergency cases in underserved regions
- Strengthening the overall health response capacity in the aftermath of the disaster
This operation demonstrated Luxembourg’s ability to deliver highly specialised, ready‑to‑operate medical infrastructure in complex emergency contexts. By providing complete surgical units rather than standalone equipment, emergency.lu ensured that healthcare services could be restored quickly, safely, and effectively, even in environments where infrastructure had been severely compromised.
